Dr. Carey’s Baby Care Kit was created to help answer the common questions and concerns new parents have during the first year with a new baby.
My first impression of the kit was that it was nicely presented – beautiful packaging, practical items, great price etc. As I opened the kit and looked at the quality of products and the well-written, full-color guidebook, I was impressed.
Many new moms are overwhelmed by all the concerns they have from rashes to “why is my baby’s poop yellow?” to development questions. They frequently find themselves at the pediatrician’s office more than they would like but there is nothing like the reassurance of a doctor to ease a new mom’s concerns.
Dr. Carey Chronis is a long-standing board certified pediatrician with a private practice in Ventura, California. He is a father and contributor to Ventura Parent Magazine. The baby Care kit was designed to be “the next best thing to getting the doctor on the phone” and it really is exactly that.
The kit contains several items that most parents will need in the first year: digital thermometer, cotton swaddling blanket, bottle for saline solution for stuffy noses, diaper rash ointment, pacifier and nose suction bulb. All of these items will help mom keep baby comfortable and happy but the most valuable item is the guidebook.
Although many baby care books and DVDs are available, this is the most photo-rich, concise guidebook I have read. It answers the important questions and tackles some of the delicate or embarrassing issues that mom might feel awkward addressing with a physician. The photos are perfect especially since there are so many types of rashes, skin anomalies (birthmarks) and even stages of healing (circumcision) that a visual comparison is the only way to answer concerns.
There is no question that all the items in the kit are essentials for the first year that will be used repeatedly. The blanket provided to give parents the right size swaddle blanket along with instructions for a calmer, happy baby but it’s important to note the blanket serves another purpose.
At about 2 months of age a baby will begin to show a preference for bright primary colors and more detailed images. Dr. Carey’s blanket has a bright, colorful, high contrast pattern which will be more interesting to baby than a plain, pastel colored blanket. Place it on your shoulder when carrying the baby or on the floor for tummy time to help stimulate development. I suspect as your baby gets older, they will be quite fond of the animal pattern and this just might become baby’s favorite “bankie”.
Dr. Carey’s Baby Care Kit is easy to recommend as a baby shower gift because it’s beautifully presented, very practical and unlike any other kit we have seen. It will help ease a parent’s mind and provides the essentials to care for your baby while answering common questions and concerns. Perfect!
