Long before bassinets, burp cloths and strollers, parents have the incredible responsibility of choosing a name for their baby. Perhaps the flowery, Victorian name you had in mind before you had children suddenly doesn’t seem to suit the rambunctious baby in your belly who is kicking and rolling every night and has hiccups every day.
Sometimes parents get so overwhelmed that the job of choosing a name becomes more of a task on a to-do list than the joyous, thoughtful, exciting process that it should be.

There were a few ideas I had immediately when I opened my Names that Stick. First, make it a game at a baby shower. The host can use the fridge or a dry erase board (any magnetic surface) and put all the names out for guests to come up with combinations. Then have everyone vote for the top names or comment on the ones that were selected. You may be surprised that a name you never thought of suddenly has huge appeal. Plus it’s a great way for family and friends to share a very meaningful part of the baby’s life since they are probably very excited about meeting this new little person too.
My second idea came about because I remember having my first ultrasound images up on the fridge for everyone to see. It would be really fun to add the names below the image once you have selected them. I think family, especially siblings, would immediately start bonding with the baby when there is something tangible to relate to. Suddenly the unidentifiable ultrasound image becomes more real – it’s now “Jade Mackenzie Smith,” your new little sister/daughter/cousin etc.
I think Names that Stick is a fun gift for expectant parents and can be used as a game for a baby shower to involve guests in a very important decision. Besides, traditional games of measuring and guessing how big a mom’s belly is might be fun for guests, but it’s often the last thing a very pregnant woman wants to be reminded of. So do her a favor and play a game that doesn’t involve telling her how unbelievably huge she is!
